Welcome to the One Health Summer Schools 2022-2023

When?  9th to 19th August 2023

Where? Bunda College, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Malawi

Who?    Participants of the 2022 Summer School (no more applications possible)

Population growth, rapid urbanization, pandemics and global conflicts and climate change are some of the major challenges that necessitate new approaches and transformation to the agricultural sector. Just like in other parts of the world, Sub-Saharan Africa has not been spared from these challenges. For a comprehensive and sustainable transformation of the food system without generating new risks and challenges, the One Health concept offers an integrated approach that considers the close links between human, animal and environmental health with particular reference to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Two consecutive Summer Schools (2022 and 2023), are jointly organized by two Malawian and two German Universities, which are Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), University of Hohenheim (UHOH), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) and Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (EKUT).

The Summer Schools will be hosted by LUANAR, Bunda College and introduce the OneHealth concept using actual case studies from Malawi. Via associated methodology and tools, 40 young scientists will work in multidisciplinary groups to develop and evaluate solutions in line with the OneHealth concept and discuss with stakeholders (e.g. farmers, livestock owners, communities) which ones will be implemented.
